The eac. has always fostered dialogue between disciplines, encouraging practices in which research plays a central role. While the visual arts are its historical foundation, current changes in artistic creation — marked by the hybridisation of media and attention to the sensory dimensions of space — now invite it to broaden this field.
Sound art, through its ability to activate listening, redefine the perception of places and offer visitors new experiences, fits naturally into this dynamic. Creating residencies dedicated to this practice reflects the eac.'s wish to extend its history as an experimental institution while supporting contemporary artistic writing.
Entitled SONORA, this new programme takes the form of a research residency conceived as a space for transmission and co-construction. Its name was proposed by the late Philippe Franck, who helped develop this residency alongside Christian Vialard.
Each session will bring together an established sound artist, invited to design an open research framework, and an emerging artist of their choice, creating a mentoring relationship based on exchange, exploration and shared experience.
SONORA will give priority to time for investigation: listening to a territory, testing set-ups, crossing different kinds of knowledge and allowing forms that are not yet defined to emerge. The format aims to support the new generation while drawing on the expertise of more experienced artists, creating an intergenerational dialogue that encourages innovation.
Set in the unique environment of the eac., the residency also aims to create opportunities to meet the public, making sound a renewed way of relating to art and place.
